Trans Director Lana Wachowski Stars In Marc Jacobs' SS16 Campaign

*praise hands emoji*

Marc Jacobs' FW15 campaign starred a line-up of boss peeps like ur girl Winona Ryder, Willow Smith, Cher and Anthony Kiedis. In what can only be described as "more-of-the-same-but-better", Marc has unveiled the first face of the Marc Jacobs SS16 campaign — trans director Lana Wachowski, creator of a little film called The Matrix, as well as Netflix's mind-bending sci-fi drama, Sense8.

Marc spoke about his casting choices for the campaign on his Insty, saying, "It is a personal diary of people who have and continue to inspire me and open my mind to different ways of seeing and thinking. The spectrum of individuals photographed in our Spring/Summer 2016 ad campaign represent a celebration of my America. [...] Collectively, they embody and celebrate the spirit and beauty of equality."

He explains that he first came across Lana on YouTube via the epic speech she gave at the Human Rights Campaign's annual gala dinner in 2012 — which, if you haven't seen, you should watch rn:

This honest, heartfelt and very necessary speech had a big impact on MJ: "She expressed thoughts and ideas that have filled my head and heart always but had never been so eloquently captured in language that was so tangible, intelligent, poignant and full of possibility," he says. "I found myself referencing Lana's words in my daily life and sharing her speech with close friends." Marc went on to invite Lana to attend his SS16 fashion show, and the rest is history.

Along with other recent campaigns like Hari Nef and Valentijn De Hingh for & Other Stories and Andreja Pejic for Make Up Forever, Marc Jacobs is doing a cool thing for trans visibility in mainstream advertising. With such a baller start, we're psyched to see who else will be involved in the campaign.
